Society for Positive Living (SPL) Gratitude and Laughter Club is a social club that is free for all anywhere in the world. We do not charge any membership fee.   • Brief HISTORY OF SOCIETY OF POSITIVE LIVING.(SPL).

 

  • A Non Governmental, Not For Profit, Non Denominational Organization founded and registered in Nigeria in 2005.

 

  • Its mission is to raise the quality of life of individuals and groups by promoting the knowledge and practice of the principles of Positive Psychology, Public Health, and Personal Development (3Ps).

THE MOTIVATION BEHIND THIS MOVEMENT.

 

Empowering people to take charge of their beliefs, feelings and actions in order to minimize negativity is worthwhile, rewarding and self fulfilling.

Nothing gives us a greater sense of personal satisfaction than contribution. Giving unselfishly is the foundation of fulfillment.

 

To become an advocate of Positive Psychology, Public Health and Personal Development (the 3Ps), is an invitation to contribute to humanity.

I shall pass this way but once. Therefore any good that I can do or any kindness that I can show- let me do it now. Let me not defer nor neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.

POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY

 

It is the scientific study of Happiness, Positivity or Positive Emotions.

 

Professor E.P Seligman initiated this branch of Psychology in 1998.

 

Earlier various authors, speakers have been advocating the Power of Positive Thinking.

 

The ‘’father’’ of the Positive Thinking movement is Norman Vincent Peale who wrote the book , The Power of Positive Thinking.’’

 

Other notable authors that promote this concept of improving the quality of one’s life by taking charge of one’s mind are

Removing ANTS From your Mind

 

ANTs means Automatic Negative Thoughts

These thoughts are called automatic because they pop into your mind involuntarily and therefore are not the product of reflection or reasoning.

As a farmer removes weeds from his garden and plant good seeds, so we are expected to remove negative thoughts from our mind and replace it with positive thoughts.

 

The Bible stated ‘’Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind’’. (Rom 12 vs 2). And ‘’as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he’’.(Proverbs 23 vs 7).

Let us make our thoughts work for us, instead of working against us.

 

        EXTERNAL EVENTS/CIRCUMSTANCES

External events or others do not create your feelings. It is your beliefs or the meaning you attach to the external events or other that creates your feeling.

A : Activating Event.

B: Beliefs and thoughts.

C Consequences. Events, whether past or present do not impose their feelings on you; your feelings are largely determined by your attitudes to these events.

In order words, you feel as you think.

 

In order to change the way you feel, you need to change the way you think.

 

Added to the ABC model are D and E.

D is for disputing or questioning your upsetting thinking. Through disputing or thinking about your thinking in more helpful ways by using reason and logic.

You can learn to develop an effective E outlook that promotes greater emotional and behavioural stability in your life.

5 A vast majority of people need techniques in self motivation and self discipline.

7 To promote the knowledge and practice of Positivity and thus generate Champions of Positivity who will go to empower those that will now empower others.

Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible – the foundation of all success in life.

Tony Robbins stated that ‘’the conception of your goals is the master plan that guides all thought’’.

He emphasized that all goal setting must be immediately followed by the development of a plan, and massive and consistent action toward its fulfillment.

‘’One of the amazing things we have been given as humans is the unquenchable desire to have dreams of a better life, and the ability to establish goals to live out those dreams.

Think of it : We can look deep within our hearts and dream of a better situation for ourselves and our families; dream of better financial lives and better emotional or physical lives, certainly dream of better spiritual lives.’’ – Jim Rohn

Steps towards setting goals:

  1. Take time to be quiet. This is something we don’t do enough in this busy world of ours.
  2. Think about what really thrills you. What do you truly want?

Health, Happiness, Family, Spirituality, Temperament, Character, Finance? etc.

Make it SMART – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time Bound.

  1. Write down all of your dreams as you have them.

When you define your goals, you give your brain something to focus on and look forward to.

You give your mind a new set of eyes to see all the people, circumstances, conversations, resources and ideas.

Management Board

The affairs of the SPL are vested on the shoulders of the management board which is headed by the Founder/President, Dr. Simeon Obruche Onakughotor.
He is a medical doctor with the Delta State University, Asaba Campus, Asaba.
He holds the Bachelor of Medicine/Surgery (MBBS) degree from the University of Benin (1995) and Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (2004).

He is a member of the International Positive Psychology Association (IPPA); a former Vice Chairman, Nigerian Medical Association, Delta State. He is an author and motivational speaker in the areas of emotional well being, leadership, stress and time management.
